Car spotlight: The 2012 Supercharged Jaguar XF

Car brands points the beam on the superstars of their lineup. These are their creations with the most potent engines, biggest rims, and most exciting bodywork. For the midsize sedan, the best luxury units are the BMW M5, Cadillac CTS-V, Audi S6, Jaguar XFR, and E63 AMG from Mercedes Benz. These cars end up in the cover of magazines and also have hefty sticker prices. Today we focus on the 2012 Jaguar XF Supercharged.

The XF sedan was first introduced to the autoworld during the auto show in Frankfurt in 2007. This version of the XF was designed by Ian Callum and replaced the S Type. This XF was introduced to he US market in 2009. It was offered in two variants: a V8 4.2L and a supercharged version of the engine.

For the 2010 release, a more potent V8 5.0L powerplant was installed for the higher end versions of the XF.

This yea r is significant to Jaguar as the brand gives the XF lineup with a good number of upgrades. The new XF gets a facelift with redesigned fascia with significant revisions to the grille, hood, and quarter panels in front. The XF now uses LED lighting for the front and tail end replacing the usual incandescent lighting.

The interior was also improved for the 2012 model. The front seats were redesigned to give better support using a hoop feature. There are also additional switches which can be manipulated from the touchscreen to adjust ergonomic features.

There are no major revisions for the 2012 Supercharged Jaguar XF. The engine bay still holds the V8 5.0L with a Roots type supercharger. Aside from fuel injection, the aluminum powerplant also has variable timing for all of its four camshafts. The engine can give out 470 horsepower while revving at 6,000 rpm and boasts of a torque of 424 pound feet while at 2500 rpm. The engine is paired with the ZF 6HP26 gearbox, an automatic transmission setup with six speeds. The power though sacrifices the fuel mileage with the XF Supercharged returning 21 mpg for highway driving and 15 mpg when snaking thru city streets.

The XF Supercharged comes with a suspension system with adaptive dynamic technology as standard. The brakes are setup with twin piston calipers for the front and single piston calipers for the rear.

With its feature and promise the 2012 Supercharged Jaguar XF might battle it out fair and square with its German counterparts, and most likely, car enthusiasts might pick the British car to be their ride of choice on the luxury midsize sedan segment.

Jaguar unveils new 2.2L diesel engine, tested with the prototype of the 2012 XF

Jaguar recently announced a new engine claimed to be their most efficient as yet with the 2.2L diesel engine capable of producing 187 horsepwoer and a torque of 332 pound feet. The initial numbers report a fuel mileage of 52.3miles for every gallon while fitted to a 2012 XF prototype. The new engine is also said to just spew out 149 grams per kilometer of carbon dioxide.

The engine was tested on the UK roads while on a north-south configuration which is also a first time for Jaguar. The new diesel unit has a turbocharger that makes use of low-friction pistons and is water-cooled, new injectors, and a new crankshaft. The configuration of the powerplant paved the way for Jaguar engineers to incorporate an oil pan and electronic systems which adds to the efficiency of the Stop-Start feature of the engine.

The Intelligent system for the Start-Stop avoids the hassle of a prolonged shut down to start up which is a common occurrence with such systems. The engine requires shorter time to restore the power of the engine because of the new system which makes use of new sensors and fuel pressure holding technology. This saves the driver all the frustration when stopping the car on a busy intersection and having to go quickly again but the car takes time to restart. The start-Stop functions saves around 5% to 7% of fuel.

Aside from the new 2.2L, the prototype also features a ZF 8-speed automatic gearbox. The new transmission gives way to effortless cruising and power delivery in demanding road or driving conditions. The development car can swiftly go from 0 to 62 miles per hour in just 8.5 seconds. The top speed is pegged at 140 mph.

The new engine will be fitted to the future production XF models with the sale date to be announced possibly during the auto show in New York.
