LaFerrari officially unveiled in Geneva

07/03/2013 No comments »

The newest flagship ride of the Ferrari brand has been officially launched at the Geneva Motor Show. The LaFerrari or TheFerrari was code named F150 and officially takes the place of the Enzo as the top biller of the Italian car marque.

The LaFerrari has a hybrid setup that blends a V-12 powerplant linked to a 7-speed gearbox and a HY-KERS system. This was done to up the output and also lower the car’s emission.

The HY-KERS system is made up of a pair of electric motors. One of the motors is mounted to the gearbox and transfers all its power to the rear wheels. The other motor is devoted to power the auxiliary devices of the car so some load is taken off the engine.

The output of the whole setup is 963 horsepower and a monstrous torque of 660 lb-ft. We still have to confirm if these are the final numbers. The supercar manufacturer has not released the final figures yet but claims that the LaFerrari can rush from 0 to 60 miles an hour in a just 3.0 seconds. Its top speed is said to be more than 217 mph.

Looking at these numbers, the LaFerrari’s closest rival will be the P1 of McLaren that also just debuted in Geneva and has a top speed of 217 mph (limited). The LaFerrari however outpaces the P1 when it comes to the to 186mph sprint which it can do in just 15 seconds.

According to Ferrari, the new supercar has a lap time of 1:20 at its Fiorano track. If this is the case, the Enzo successor is 5 seconds faster than the previous flagship while 3 seconds better than its cousin, the F12 Berlinetta.

Looking at the technology for this production vehicle, the LaFerrari boasts of a new hybrid setup and a new monocoque architecture crafted from carbon fiber that has been developed by the F1 team of Ferrari. The new structure is said to be tougher and stiffer than the Enzo’s core. It uses four different kinds of carbon fiber that has been processed in the same manner as the F1 race car.

Some purists may hate the fact that Ferrari’s new supercar is a hybrid. Well it brings it a host of benefits aside from being eco-friendlier. It helps the car have a more precise distribution of brake force, torque vectoring, and traction control.

Only 499 LaFerrari units will be built and most of these are now accounted for.

Audi senior exec boasts of diesel hybrid supercar performance

2012-audi-r18-e-tron-quattro-lmp1-race-car_100383733_lA few weeks back, news that Audi is planning to launch a supercar that will be positioned about the R8 created some buzz. In addition, the said supercar will have a hybrid powertrain that will utilize a diesel engine in tandem with electric motors. Its setup will be taking inspiration from the R18 e-tron prototype.

The exciting announcement was made by Wolfgang Durheimer. He was the former topman for Bugatti and Bentley and is not the chief of research and development of Audi.

More recently, Franciscus Van Meel, top exec for the performance division of Audi, revealed that if Audi will be building a supercar, it will be totally different from the Audi R8. He assures consumers that it will even surpass the McLaren P1. Of course, we still do not know the specs of the upcoming supercar from McLaren so we cannot take his comment too seriously.

The best thing about this is the confirmation that Audi is considering to make a new supercar. Most likely, the Audi quattro boss will be the man who will be on top of things for the build, if ever it will be given the go.

It might be too early to talk about the supercar’s specs but if it will be able to keep up with the McLaren P1 or other supercars like the replacement for the Ferrari Enzo or the 918 Spyder by Porsche, the Audi supercar should need an engine that at least can produce 700 horses and at least have a torque of 737 lb-ft.

The diesel-electric setup for the hybrid drivetrain of Audi has proven itself on the tracks. It has helped Audi capture its 11th title at the prestigious race in Le Mans. It is pretty evident that the carmaker wants to bring the technology and success to the road.

The setup involves a diesel engine that transfers its power to the rear wheels and two electric motors that each spins the front wheels. The electric motors depend on lithium ion batteries backed up by energy recovered from the brake system. This setup is similar to what you might see on the next gen Acura NSX but with a gasoline engine.

The R8 e-tron may have been dropped but it seems Audi is planning a more substantial product for its fans.

Video: Aventador meets the Matador in Spain

Our friends at Motor Trend were recently handed the keys to the sleek Lamborhini Matador. They earned a date for one week with this 691-horsepower supercar and brought it from Italy across Europe to Spain.

Frank Marcus took the great roads that the participants of Tour de France are familiar with. Instead of taking a 13-hour trip straight to Zaragoza, he first brought it to the classy destination of Monaco. The pedestrians in Monaco made it a bit hard to test the F1 route so the crew detoured to Nice in France and reached the highest paved streets in Europe at around 2,800 meters.

Everyone might have read about how Ferrucio Lamborghini loved bullfighting. He admired it so much that he made the charging bull the emblem of his company but also called the cars based on the best fighting bulls. The Lamborghini V12 Murcielago, for example, was named after a famous bull that was recognized for being so brave that its life was spared. The Aventador was also named after a bull that was not so lucky in the ring.

So for the trip, the Lamborghini Aventador was taken to a place where the supercar made from carbon fiber got its name.

Click on the video below and see how the raging bull rushed through Europe.

After receiving praises, Lexus gives production green light for LF-LC?

31/07/2012 No comments »

The Lexus LF-LC Concept was unwrapped during the auto show in Detroit about six months ago. It was just that, a concept vehicle. The wild Lexus though received some praises and won some design awards. Positive feedback came from all directions. A recent report is creating some buzz as Karl Schlict gives a 50-50 go signal for production.

After a few more months , the topman for product planning of Lexus and Toyota has just pushed the 2+2 hybrid coupe closer to production. The Lexus LF-LC is officially on development and will most likely hit the production pipeline. The manufacturer even sent a crystal block to dealers containing a 3D etching of the Lexus hybrid coupe and suggested that if the dealers can deliver 27,500 units of GS sedans to the garages of consumers, they will have the chance to sell the LF-LC.

Let us not get too excited since all talks are still happening within the confines of the Lexus network. There is still a chance that it will not happen. There is a big motivation though for Lexus to push through with the LF-LC. The brand has been leading the luxury car segment for more than a decade in the US but it fell two notches according to the latest sales figures. Mercedes-Benz and BMW has been upping their games and the luxury branch of Toyota knows that it is about time to give consumers better products and try to regain leadership. Everyone thinks that the radical LF-LC can do this for Lexus.

Again, it is still very early and we have no idea if the LF-LC will really move from the auto show halls to dealer showrooms. If the production will ever roll out, this will be aiming to compete with the V8 Vantage of Aston Martin and the Porsche 911. Sounds pretty exciting don’t you think?

Car spotlight: The 2012 Supercharged Jaguar XF

17/02/2012 No comments »

Car brands points the beam on the superstars of their lineup. These are their creations with the most potent engines, biggest rims, and most exciting bodywork. For the midsize sedan, the best luxury units are the BMW M5, Cadillac CTS-V, Audi S6, Jaguar XFR, and E63 AMG from Mercedes Benz. These cars end up in the cover of magazines and also have hefty sticker prices. Today we focus on the 2012 Jaguar XF Supercharged.

The XF sedan was first introduced to the autoworld during the auto show in Frankfurt in 2007. This version of the XF was designed by Ian Callum and replaced the S Type. This XF was introduced to he US market in 2009. It was offered in two variants: a V8 4.2L and a supercharged version of the engine.

For the 2010 release, a more potent V8 5.0L powerplant was installed for the higher end versions of the XF.

This yea r is significant to Jaguar as the brand gives the XF lineup with a good number of upgrades. The new XF gets a facelift with redesigned fascia with significant revisions to the grille, hood, and quarter panels in front. The XF now uses LED lighting for the front and tail end replacing the usual incandescent lighting.

The interior was also improved for the 2012 model. The front seats were redesigned to give better support using a hoop feature. There are also additional switches which can be manipulated from the touchscreen to adjust ergonomic features.

There are no major revisions for the 2012 Supercharged Jaguar XF. The engine bay still holds the V8 5.0L with a Roots type supercharger. Aside from fuel injection, the aluminum powerplant also has variable timing for all of its four camshafts. The engine can give out 470 horsepower while revving at 6,000 rpm and boasts of a torque of 424 pound feet while at 2500 rpm. The engine is paired with the ZF 6HP26 gearbox, an automatic transmission setup with six speeds. The power though sacrifices the fuel mileage with the XF Supercharged returning 21 mpg for highway driving and 15 mpg when snaking thru city streets.

The XF Supercharged comes with a suspension system with adaptive dynamic technology as standard. The brakes are setup with twin piston calipers for the front and single piston calipers for the rear.

With its feature and promise the 2012 Supercharged Jaguar XF might battle it out fair and square with its German counterparts, and most likely, car enthusiasts might pick the British car to be their ride of choice on the luxury midsize sedan segment.

Unconfirmed Toyota FT-86 images leaked on the internet

31/10/2011 No comments »

Pictures hinting of the design and styling of the new Toyota FT-86 spilled on the web apparently scanned from a brochure thru a fan website after the vehicle gets a makeover at Modellista, the in-house Toyota tuning arm.

The Japanese car manufacturer does not want to officially comment about the validity of the FT-86 images but some sources say that they are actually real. The production version of the new Toyota FT-86 will have a small difference in terms of the exterior of the pictured vehicle. The major changes focus on toning down the design lines of the alloy rims and the vehicle’s bumpers. The design of the vehicle is also very close to the concept vehicle FT-86 II which was unveiled during the Geneva motor show.

The leaked images also give you a quick look of the cabin of the FT-86 which remains true with the promise of the carmaker to use a back to basics approach design for the coupe. The cabin is dominated by red and black featuring sports seats and a short throw gear stick for shifting the six speed manual transmission. There is also a button which might hint a push-to-start function.

The instrument cluster leads the eyes to the white rev counter that shows the red line at 7,500 rpm. The speed is noted at the speedometer on the left hand and also on a digital display in the center. The brochure though does not include technical details about the FT-86.

The final version for production of the Toyota FT-86 will be unveiled at the motor show in Tokyo this November ahead of its launch in Britain by summer of 2012.

The Toyota FT-86 targets enthusiast drivers and gets inspiration from the rear drive Corolla AE86 produced back in the 1980s. The FT-86 will sport an engine by Subaru that will be capable of giving out 200 bhp. The engine will be linked with a 6-speed manual transmission and will also feature a limited slip differential.

Toyota aims to slice off some weight from the older version and make the new FT-86 to hit the scales at 1100 kilograms or about 200 kilos lighter than a Scirocco of Volkswagen. The sticker price is still to be confirmed but it might be close to around £20,000.
